FMovies: what happened, and where to watch now

If you searched for FMovies and landed on a strange site full of pop-ups, here is why. The original FMovies was shut down in 2024. This guide explains what happened and how to watch the same movies and shows legally.

The short answer

FMovies no longer exists. On August 29, 2024, the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), the anti-piracy coalition backed by the major Hollywood studios and streaming services, announced that Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security and the Hanoi police had shut down FMovies and arrested the people running it. US federal agencies supported the investigation.

Key numbers from ACE: FMovies-linked domains received more than 6.7 billion visits between January 2023 and June 2024. At its 2023 peak, fmoviesz.to ranked around the 280th most visited site in the world.

Why FMovies was shut down

FMovies streamed movies and TV shows without permission from the studios that own them. It was more than one site: ACE linked it to over 60 domains and brands, including Bmovies, 9anime, Putlocker and Solarmovies, and to vidsrc.to, a video host that supplied streams to hundreds of other piracy sites. Taking down the operators cut off a large part of the pirate streaming network at once.

What are the "FMovies" sites I see now?

After the shutdown, copycat sites quickly appeared with names like fmovies plus a different ending, or small spelling changes. They borrow the old look to win search traffic. They are not the original team, they are not licensed, and their business model is advertising, which is why they are known for:

  • Pop-under windows and redirects to gambling, adult or scam pages.
  • Fake "Play" and "Download HD" buttons that install browser extensions or unwanted software.
  • Fake prompts asking you to "update your video player" or "verify you are human" by allowing notifications.
  • Streams that disappear mid-film when the host is taken down.

How to watch the same movies safely

Almost everything people looked for on FMovies is available legally in the US, often for free with ads or with a library card. Here is the quickest way to decide:

  1. Search the title on FFMovies. Each page shows whether it is in theaters, for rent, or included with a subscription.
  2. Check the free services first. Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Kanopy and Hoopla carry thousands of movies at no cost.
  3. Rent instead of subscribing for a one-off new release. Digital rentals on Apple TV, Prime Video or Fandango at Home usually cost less than a monthly plan.
  4. Rotate subscriptions. Subscribe to one service for the month a show you want is released, then cancel and switch.

Is there a new FMovies site?

No. There is no new official FMovies site or app. Domains such as fmoviesz, fmovies24 and fmovies.to variants are run by unrelated operators. Our FMovies clones guide explains how to spot them.

FAQ

Is FMovies down permanently?

Yes. The original FMovies was shut down in August 2024 and its operators were arrested. Any site using the name today is a clone.

Is it illegal to use FMovies clone sites in the US?

These sites stream copyrighted films without a license. Beyond the legal issues, they expose visitors to malicious ads and scams. We are not lawyers; the safest course is to use licensed services.

What replaced FMovies?

Nothing official. For free, legal streaming, Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Kanopy and Hoopla are the closest match to FMovies' large free catalog.

Why do FMovies clone sites keep appearing?

Piracy sites earn money from ads and redirects. When one is taken down, operators register new domains with similar names to capture search traffic.
